IBM Iseries AS400 Tutorials – The Command Line

IBM I Series

All right, I’m going to show you the command line for the IBM Iseries AS 400. When you log in to the system, usually you have this command line right here. And that’s where you enter in commands. Pretty simple, pretty straightforward. So for example, if you want to look at active jobs, you just type in work active jobs and takes you to that programme. If you want to look at spool files, to be RK s PLF. take you to the spool files. You want to work without queues without queue so on and so forth. What I usually find with commands is that they’re usually they’re always tend to be abbreviations of words for at least for the stuff that’s part of the operating system. They’re always abbreviated words. And they and the abbreviations tend to be in three characters. So work commands are always WRK. And then for like an out cue that I just showed you, it’s OUT and then Q so on and so forth. One kind of neat thing, if you can’t remember command name, is you can use the splat or more commonly known as the Asterix for kind of wildcard searches to find your command. So if you know it’s a word command, and you’re going to see in a second here that there’s a lot of work commands, you can do a WRK splat and then enter and it will bring back all the commands on the system that start with WRK. As you can see, there are a whole bunch of them. So if you have another command that you want to use you can just use the little splat or the Asterix search to help you narrow it down. So in this case, if I knew it was work, a for work, active jobs, I can do that. And then here it narrows it down and then there we first one on the list is work hack job. You take one and it just prompts you for any parameters that you want to put in will take the default. And that’s it. So that is kind of in a nutshell. How you work with the command line on the IBM AS400 Iseries. There’s a lot more to it, but that’s just kind of a quick introduction.
